Advent is the Christian celebration that leads up to
Christmas Day, much as Lent leads to Easter. It begins on the
fourth Sunday before Christmas, and is observed each day until
Christmas, as a means of focusing our attention on the Christ
whom Christmas is all about.
In most Western traditions, Advent is celebrated as a short
time of family devotions each evening. Typically the family
gathers each night to light the Advent candles*, read a portion
of the Christmas story from the Bible, read a short devotional
thought, and pray together.
Jotham's Journey was written as a resource for parents
in designing the Advent celebration for their families, whether
that be a "traditional" family structure or one of the
many combinations of children, parents, grandparents, and non-parents
that make up today's families. Each day you will read together a
new installment of Jotham's story, along with a devotional
thought drawn from that story. Through family discussion and/or
prayer, you will then be just a little better prepared to face
those hectic December days, and that one special day we call
Christmas.
