Fife

The fife is another logical extension of the flute. It requires the formation of a flute embouchure, hence an easy transition is made to the concert flute. The smaller size of the fife allows the developing player to learn a sizeable repertoire before there is a need to switch to the concert flute.

Historically, music for the fife was written in the key of 'D.' Fife players traditionally use 'D' instrument fingerings and play music written for the 'D' instrument.
