A versatile performer on modern and
period instruments, Jason Dovel is a trumpet artist who
currently resides in northeastern Oklahoma. A native of Virginia,
he grew
up in the scenic Shenandoah Valley. The
valedictorian of his senior class, he went on to study
music at James
Madison University in
Harrisonburg, Virginia, where he studied trumpet with James
Kluesner; Studies at JMU
were in music education with a minor in jazz studies.
Upon graduation from James Madison, he moved to Ohio and completed a master’s
degree in trumpet performance at the College
of Musical Arts of Bowling
Green State University where he studied classical
trumpet with George
Novak and jazz trumpet with Charles
Saenz. He recently completed the Doctor of
Musical Arts degree in trumpet performance at the University
of North Texas, where he studied with Regents
Professor of Trumpet Keith
Johnson.
As a professional trumpet player, he has performed with groups such as the Lima
Symphony Orchestra, Perrysburg
Symphony Orchestra, Adrian
Symphony Orchestra, Virginia
Consort, Denton
Bach Society, Waynesboro
Choral Society, Heritage
Repertory Theatre, New
Lyric Theatre, Jump
Alley Jazz Band and many other ensembles.
During the 2006-2007 concert season he performed with the Lone
Star Wind Orchestra and the Dallas
Opera, both in Dallas, and the Meridian Chamber
Players in Denton, Texas.
In addition to being a modern trumpet
performer, Dr. Dovel is an early music enthusiast and
performs on the cornetto and baroque trumpet. Dr. Dovel
has performed with the Bowling Green Early
Music Ensemble, Texas Baroque Trumpets, North Texas
Baroque Orchestra, Baroque Trumpet Ensemble, and Collegium
chamber ensembles.
Dr. Dovel is currently the trumpet
teacher at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah,
Oklahoma. Prior to his appointment at NSU, he
taught at the University of North Texas as
a Doctoral Teaching Fellow and at North Central
Texas College as an adjunct faculty member.
Dr. Dovel is also
available as a clinician and teacher for high school and
middle school students. He holds a instrumental
music teaching license and has previously taught as a
part-time instructor for the
Richardson ISD, Denton
ISD and the Frisco ISD. Dr. Dovel has also served as the trumpet teacher for the Bowling Green
State University Creative
Arts Program.
Dr. Dovel is available as a trumpet performer
in all types of settings, including weddings, church
services, orchestral, band and jazz performances.
