A versatile performer
on modern and period instruments, Jason Dovel is
an active recitalist,
educator, and orchestral musician throughout the United States.
A native of Virginia, he grew up by the Blue Ridge
Mountains in the picturesque Shenandoah Valley. The valedictorian of his
senior class, he went on to study music at James Madison University in
Harrisonburg, Virginia,
where he studied trumpet with James Kluesner (now retired)
and completed a bachelor's degree in music
education with a minor in jazz studies.
Upon graduation from James
Madison, he moved to Ohio and completed a master's degree in trumpet
performance at the College
of Musical Arts of Bowling Green
State University where he studied classical
trumpet with George Novak (now retired) and jazz trumpet with Charles
Saenz. He then
spent two quick years in Texas, where he completed the Doctor of Musical Arts
in trumpet performance at the University
of North Texas, studying with renowned Regents Professor of Trumpet Keith Johnson.
Jason Dovel is
currently assistant
professor of music at Northeastern
State University
in Tahlequah, Oklahoma, where his teaching
responsibilities include trumpet lessons, trumpet
ensemble, brass methods, and instrumental
pedagogy. Prior to his appointment at NSU, he
taught at the University of North Texas as a teaching
fellow and at North Central Texas College as an adjunct
faculty member.
Dr. Dovel has performed
in a wide range of ensembles, including playing modern trumpet in
the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra and Dallas Opera Orchestra, Baroque trumpet
in the North Texas Baroque Orchestra and Texas Baroque Trumpets, and
cornet in the Crested Butte All-Star Brass Brand (Colorado) and Heidelberg
Brass Band (Ohio). He has also performed with groups such as the Lima Symphony Orchestra, Perrysburg Symphony Orchestra,
Adrian Symphony
Orchestra, Virginia
Consort, Denton Bach Society,
Waynesboro
Choral Society, Heritage Repertory
Theatre, New Lyric
Theatre, Jump Alley Jazz Band
and many other ensembles. During the 2006-2007 concert season he
performed and recorded with the Lone
Star Wind Orchestra in Dallas, TX.
