This scene shows the calling of Matthew and is based on Matthew 9:9: "And as Jesus passed forth from thence, he saw a man, named Matthew, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he saith unto him, Follow me. And he rose, and followed him." The traditional symbols of Saint Matthew at the top are the kneeling winged man (at the top of each lancet) and the money bags at Matthew's elbow and in the diamond at the top.
