John Peter Gabriel Muhlenberg (1746-1807) was pastor of the Lutheran Church in Woodstock, Virginia. This window depicts him delivering his last sermon based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8 ("...a time for peace and a time for WAR"). At the conclusion of the sermon he shed his clerical robes to reveal his sword, and set forth to fight in the American Revolution. Nearby is the uniform of a militia officer. Commissioned a colonel in the Continental Army, he ended the war a Major General, having participated in the battles of Germantown, Brandywine, Monmouth, Stony Point, and commanding the First Brigade of Light Infantry at Yorktown. The artist has presented exceptionally well the illusion of space, the details of the locale, and the suggestion of high drama. The diamond pane at the top contains a sword enclosed by plumes.
