The Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Selected Readings

We make a living by what we get,

but we make a life by what we give.

Winston Churchill

We are rich in proportion

to what we can let go.

Henry David Thoreau

Luther Quote of the Day

No tree bears fruit for itself; a tree gives its fruits to others.  In fact, no creature lives for itself and serves itself alone (except man and the devil).  The sun does not shine for itself; water does not flow for itself, etc.

Today at Muhlenberg

Welcome Nancy and Larry Gerst

Today we are delighted to welcome Nancy Gerst, our new Director of Liturgical Arts, and her husband Larry.  Nancy comes to us from Resurrection Lutheran Church in Cary, North Carolina, where she has served as Director of Music Ministries/Senior Organist.  Welcome, Nancy and Larry!

Greetings from your new DLA!

Many people have helped to make Larry and I feel so warmly welcomed to this congregation. I invite anyone with an interest in the music and arts programs here to feel free to call me or stop by my office to chat. Sign-up sheets for the various musical groups are posted in the choir room along with more information about the various ways for Muhlenberg’s musicians to participate. (See today’s “Music Ministry Announcements” insert for more information.)  May the Lord bless us as we Make His Praise Glorious!

Nilsen Update

Workday for K. Roy Nilsen

Many folks have asked how K. Roy Nilsen is doing in the weeks since Vivian's death and funeral, and what we can do to support him.  He is grieving terribly for Vivian and doing his best with the help of family, friends and church family.  He is so appreciative of the cards and letters from the MLC family.  As many of us know, grief is a process and each person does it differently and needs to be given the time they need to grieve well while still being loved and cared for through this difficult time.  When I asked K. Roy what we could do to be helpful, he said, “I will be building a small home next to Ken (his son) and Dee in the Edinburg area.  A lot has been cleared of trees and I wonder if a bunch of guys from Muhlenberg would help clear brush and undergrowth some Saturday.”  I told him I would send out the notice to our Muhlenberg men and others who may be interested.  Saturday, August 11 from 9 am to 1 pm will be the day.  We will meet in the church lot at 8:30 with gloves, trimmers and weed-eaters and then drive to Edinburg.  If you can spare some time to help K. Roy, please sign up TODAY outside the Library door.  Thanks for your willingness to serve!
