The Seventeenth Sunday after Pentecost

Selected Readings

At some level, we are all “guilty bystanders” (Thomas Merton) whose ordinary choices have consequences far beyond what we can imagine in the present moment.   In the world God created there is no “other.”

Bruce Epperly

Lord Jesus, defender of the weak, may those whose income is insufficient for health and dignity, find their dignity & well-being by faith in You; and may they also find courage, energy and hope through us, as we use what resources we have for the common good.

A Prayer by Bill Fletcher

Luther Quote of the Day

Whoever feels the goodness of God, feels also for the misfortunes of his neighbor; but whoever is not conscious of the goodness of God has no heart for his neighbor.

Social Ministry News

Food to Help “Fan”

All food collected on Sunday, October 7, will be donated to the Salvation Army’s FAN (Food Assistance to the Needy) Program.  Alpha Teens will deliver our offering to our neighbors in need, so let each person who comes to church that day bring one can, one box, or one bag of some type of non-perishable food.  Thank you from the Social Ministry!

Finance Update

Give it to Uncle Sam or give it to your church!  Until December 31, 2007, if you are 70½, you can give directly to your church from your IRA.  This can count toward your required distribution and allow you to give more because it is not taxed.  Call Janet Simmons (434-5258) or Terry Looney (433-2525) for details.

Devotional booklets for

October–December 2007

are available in the Narthex.

Women’s Retreat

Coming up November 2-3 at Bryce Resort.  Can you spare 24 hours for fun and fellowship with an amazing group of women?  Of course you can!  In addition to dining out and enjoying the peaceful mountain retreat, we’ll explore the Psalms and their relevance to our own conversations with God.  Registration forms are on the desk in the Narthex, and we need to know who’s going by October 21st.  $45 (scholarships available).

Marriage Enrichment

On Friday evening December 7 – Saturday afternoon December 8, Muhlenberg will hold a Marriage Enrichment Retreat at Camp Overlook’s Blessings lodge.  We still have room for more couples.  If you would like to attend, please call Diane Bayer (434-3496).  We are asking for a $20.00 deposit per couple.  Make checks out to Muhlenberg and write “Marriage Retreat” in the memo line.

Muhlenberg’s own Mary Bob Holm helps one of the children of Second Home with reading skills.  If you would like to volunteer, call Second Home at 432-7989.  See the October issue of The Red Door for more information.
