reformation sunday

Selected Readings

A premise of scripture is that we are not free and sovereign. We are servants of one lord or the other.

Bruce Modahl

...Jesus says that we need only seven words—those mumbled by the tax collector as he stood at a distance and stared at the ground: “God, have mercy on me, a sinner.” The moment we breathe those words and cast our unadorned selves upon God, we experience His love without conditions or limits.

Daniel Clendenin

Our churches teach that men cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works but are freely justified for Christ’s sake through faith when they believe that they are received into favor and that their sins are forgiven on account of Christ, who by his death made satisfaction for our sins.  This faith God imputes for righteousness in his sight.

Augsburg Confession, Article IV
