The First Sunday in Advent

Selected Readings

"The duty enjoined is not to watch for Christ, but to watch ourselves to see that we are ready."                                  B.W. Johnson, 1891

"Advent is concerned with that very connection between memory and hope which is so necessary to man. Advent’s intention is to awaken the most profound and basic emotional memory within us, namely, the memory of the God who became a child. This is a healing memory; it brings hope. The purpose of the Church’s year is continually to rehearse her great history of memories, to awaken the heart’s memory so that it can discern the star of hope…”

                                Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger,

Seek That Which Is Above,1986

Luther Quote for the Day

Great God, what do I see and hear!  The end of things created!  The judge of mankind doth appear on clouds of glory seated!  The trumpet sounds; the graves restore,The dead which they contained before; Prepare, my soul, to meet Him!

Today at Muhlenberg

The Season of Advent

The first Sunday of Advent is the beginning of a new church year.  In our Gospel readings from Matthew, hopeful people are urged to be ready for God’s unexpected appearances.  The sung liturgy changes, with responses from Setting Four in our hymnal and other sources.  Our Advent Wreath response comes from a South Korean composer, Geonyong Lee, giving our liturgy an echo that Christ came for all the nations of the world.

Advent—waiting, preparing, pondering, and hoping as we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s coming at Bethlehem.  The Advent wreath expectantly marks the passing weeks.  Blue paraments are used, following the Scandinavian tradition in which blue represents hope and expectation.  The nativity scene appears, first as a bare stable, which will grow each week in anticipation of the arrival of the Christ child on Christmas Eve.

O come, O come, Emmanuel!

ADVENT DEVOTIONALS

A Circle of Love, a family devotional for Advent may be found on the table in the  Narthex.

CONSECRATION SUNDAY CELEBRATION TODAY

Today is the day we make our giving promises into a form of written covenant with God and for everyone to “consecrate” or make holy their written and unwritten pledges of giving for the year ahead.  You will be asked to bring forward your blue pledge card, which can be found in the pews, during today’s liturgy.  Join us today after the 11 am liturgy for a time of celebration and returning thanks for God’s many blessings.  A catered reception will be held in the MAC.

Advent-ure Sunday-TODAY!

 inclement Weather Policy

This notice is just a reminder to everyone to tune in to the WSVA AM 550 Radio or WHSV Television stations to monitor church closings on Sunday mornings.  We almost never close.  However, if we decide to cancel the 8:00 and 9:30 a.m. worship services, Sunday School will also be cancelled for that morning.  Every attempt will be made to hold the 11:00 a.m. service but it may be cancelled if conditions are too severe.  If the 11:00 a.m. service is cancelled, the 6:30 p.m. service will also be cancelled.

ATTENTION ALL CONFIRMATION MENTORS

In this season of Advent we all prepare for the coming of our Lord as a tiny babe lying in a manger.  I would ask that each of you take the opportunity during Advent to prepare together with your confirmand by calling them to have a faith conversation and perhaps plan an outing together.  Sharing in the journey of Advent with your confirmand is a blessing for both of you and a great faith forming experience.
