The Day Of Pentecost

Selected Readings

Pentecost, however, is not an event to be wished for lightly. The Spirit is somewhat cranky and given to its own thing.

Mark Harris,

The Christian Century, 2005.

The coming of the Spirit signals nothing less than the beginning of the eschaton, its invasion of the world and its bid for the worlds people.

Beverly R. Gaventa,

The Christian Century, 1993.

Luther Quote of the Day

For there is no such Christ that died for sinners who do not, after the forgiveness of sins, desist from sins and lead a new life.  They may be fine Easter preachers, but they are very poor Pentecost preachers, for they do not preach “about the sanctification by the Holy Spirit,” but solely about the redemption of Jesus Christ, although Christ (whom they extoll so highly, and rightly so) is Christ, that is, he has purchased redemption from sin and death so that the Holy Spirit might transform us out of the old Adam into new men.

The Festival of Pentecost

Today we celebrate the Power of the Spirit poured out upon the chosen disciples and the Church, sent into the world to preach the Gospel.  The liturgical color for the day is red, which represents the tongues of fire of the Holy Spirit and the blood of the Church’s martyrs.  Red geraniums at the altar and red banners also symbolize the tongues of fire.

As a part of the First Reading, which tells of the people speaking in different languages on the Day of Pentecost, a number of people will be reading a portion of the Lesson in various languages simultaneously.  A Gospel procession will be used today to represent the coming of the Spirit into our midst.  We thank all who have prepared and are participating in a special way today to make this Festival a meaningful one.

Blessed Mother’s Day

We honor and give thanks today for all mothers and those who love and nurture children. Through their constant and generous care, mothers become windows through which we can glimpse the loving and abiding care that God provides for us each day.  We rejoice in the gift of mothers, and the Muhlenberg community wishes all of them a most blessed day.

Mother’s Day Breakfast

All Mothers and women who have nurtured us in faith are invited to a breakfast in their honor TODAY at 9:30 a.m. in the MAC.
