A Bite Of Cheesesteak History

"I never walked  into a real steak and hoagie shop and saw the word Philly cheesesteak anywhere in the restaurant.

When I moved from Philly I was shocked when I couldn't find a real cheesesteak anywhere."

That's why we're here!

What is a Philly Cheesesteak?

A Misunderstood Sandwich

That's right, sandwich. It’s really called a cheesesteak sandwich. Even though it comes on a steak roll, or hoagie roll,(You might know it as a sub roll).

Cheesesteaks were invented in the 1930's  by Pat's Steaks, located in the heart of South Philadelphia. Originally, they were topped with tomato sauce. We call that a pizza steak. Sauce is not automatically put on steak sandwiches anymore, for that matter, nothing is. A real Philly cheesesteak consists of real steak  and normally either, white American cheese, provolone cheese, or Cheez-Whiz. Yea that's right Cheeze-Whiz. That's it. Nothing more, nothing less. Now you can add things to it if you like. For instance; fried onions, mushrooms, hot, sweet, or green peppers. Add them all, or add nothing, it's still a Philly cheesesteak. Many people (outside of Philly) think green peppers and onions are part of a Philly cheesesteak. That’s not true.

Also a cheesesteak is not a cheesesteak hoagie  unless you add  lettuce, tomato, and mayonnaise.(mayo is optional)

(small plug)
We make our cheesesteaks exactly the way they are made in Philadelphia. From the meat and ingredients, to the roll. Lets not forget the cheese. Any cheesesteak you buy here can be called a Philly cheesesteak, no matter what you put on it. But we like to call them just "cheesesteaks".

When you order a cheesesteak here, we are going to put Cheeze-Whiz on it, unless you ask for a different cheese. The reason is: No place that I know of, outside of the Philadelphia area uses Cheeze-Whiz, plus it’s delicious on a cheesesteak. In fact, any cheese you select will be just fine. So you pick. Try them all if you like. Separately of course. Except for the Philly Billy Special Cheesesteak, which has white American and Cheeze-Whiz. An unbelievable taste sensation.

The bottom line is: You either make cheesesteaks the way they should be made, or you don't.

We wouldn't think of changing ours. Everyone Here at Philly Billy's hopes you enjoy all of our sandwiches.

                                                            Thanks, Philly Billy

How to Order a Cheesesteak

You might think it silly, but there is a right way and a wrong way to order a cheesesteak.
First of all, don't ask for a "steak and cheese". Let's call it what it really is, a "cheesesteak"... Many people call me (phone orders) and start to tell me what they don't want on their cheesesteak. A cheesesteak doesn't automatically come with anything on it. You have to tell us "what you want", not "what you don't want". OK, so now some of you are thinking, what is a Philly Cheesesteak then? It is exactly what it says it is. Steak topped with cheese. All other toppings are up to the person ordering. If a Steak Shop uses the right steak, rolls, and cheese, you can add anything you want to the sandwich and it is still a Philly Cheesesteak. (oh, and never call it a SUB, a cheesesteak is not a SUB, it's a sandwich)
The second biggest mis-steak many people outside of the Philadelphia area make is their choice of toppings. NEVER order a cheesesteak with oil and vinegar, it just wasn't meant to be. Vinegar belongs on a salad, not on a cheesesteak. Also, I would like to know who came up with black olives on a cheesesteak, that's ridiculous.
Here are some normal toppings for a cheesesteak; fried or raw onions, hot peppers, sweet peppers, mushrooms, roasted peppers, green peppers, lettuce, tomato, and pickles for some. That's it, with just a few exceptions, anything else would be UN-Philly.
Remember these guidelines and you will be rewarded with one of the finest sandwiches on the planet.

Thanks, Philly Billy
